  9.  AB    OBJECTIVES: To study psychological/social stressors and problems. To
  10.        explore behavioural risk factors. To identify and analyse coping
  11.        mechanisms. To identify pre and post test counselling issues and
  12.        strategies. METHODOLOGY: Detailed case work records of senior social
  13.        work students placed in HIV/AIDS counselling centres from 1991-93, were
  14.        analysed. Cases were selected from various departments of a Grant
  15.        Medical College and Hospital of Bombay city, India, based on hospital
  16.        referral system. RESULTS: Majority of cases undergo major psychological,
  17.        social reaction/burdens. In majority of the cases, multiple heterosexual
  18.        contacts are predominant. Cases shown marked improvement with supportive
  19.        counselling, family therapy, at times psychiatric intervention.
  20.        DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As psychosocial burden of HIV infected
  21.        patients and their families are enormous, case workers need indepth
  22.        exploration of each case before formulating the person-specific
  23.        intervention. Apart from general medical care, the psychiatric social
  24.        work methods found useful.
